Trinity Wins Third Open A1 Basketball Championship
A clutch Josh Louis three-pointer with four seconds to play has propelled Trinity College to their third-consecutive Sports Association of Adelaide Schools (SAAS) Open A1 Basketball Championship after a thrilling 61-59 victory over traditional rivals Concordia last Saturday.
Trinity led for much of the game but found themselves trailing with 16 seconds left in the game after a tough lay-up put Concordia ahead for the first time in the second half. Trinity called time out, and the resultant play saw point guard Tyler Biscette (Year 9) come up off a well-executed screen from big man Josh Clayton to find an open Louis for the game-winner.
Clayton was named the game’s MVP with 22 points at 81% FG and 18 rebounds. Sam Upton hit 4-8 from the three-point line for his 12 points whilst Louis also had 10 points and three assists. For Concordia, Darcy Wyman found lanes to the basket all game for 18 points at 63% FG, and Sturt NBL1star Luke Pfitzner recorded a game-high 24 points despite being ‘well-held’.
Earlier in the year Concordia inflicted Trinity’s only loss of the season, a 49-30 drubbing in Round 1.
The win seals Trinity’s seventh SAAS title in just ten years since this current format has been running. Trinity has appeared in every grand final to maintain an incredible standard of performance unmatched in any major SAAS sport.
Both teams now turn their attention to the Statewide Knockout competition where they will vie for a state championship and automatic qualification to the National Schools Championships in December.
