Trinity Wins Div 3 Grand Final
The Trinity College 1st XVIII flexed their determination muscle and team spirit to seal a historic victory over cross town rivals Rostrevor College winning the Sports Association for Adelaide Schools (SAAS) Division 3 Grand Final 17.10 (112) to 6.11 (47) at the Richmond Oval on Wednesday last week.
Trinity College goal scorers were Sam Tedesco (4), Denver Hryhorec (4), Zach Quintel-Moyle (3), Harrison Schubert (3), Rashawn Aguis (2) and Cooper Fieldhouse (1).
Cooper Fieldhouse whose run and carry set up many forward opportunities was awarded the Grand Final medal and Denver Hryhorec, Mason Lowe, Zach Quintel-Moyle and Lachlan Dekort also received special mention.
Rostrevor College had inflicted Trinity’s first loss of the season a 53-50 outcome at a Rostrevor College home game in late July but, Trinity is experiencing a rebirth in football, with excellent results in Year 7/8 Div 1 Knockout for boys, a narrow 7-point loss to Sacred Heart in the state preliminary final, and a Div 2 Boys Knockout Grand Final loss to Blackwood High, the boys from the 1st XVIII were well and truly up for the challenge.
Coach Justin Platten said, “After we played them last time, we felt they won the contest a bit too easy, so our focus was to rectify that.”
“We knew if we won the contest and got the ball on the outside to our runners, we were a good chance of winning. We know that leg speed and ball use are one of our strengths as a team. We did have a slow start but midway through the first quarter we got the game on our terms which we proceeded to do for the remaining three quarters. Whilst we had moments of individual highlights, I was extremely impressed with how we played as a team, we didn't have any passengers on the day.”
The last Trinity team to win a football trophy was in 1995 in a Div 2 1st XVII knockout competition that featured four eventual AFL draftees of Trinity Old Scholars. However, with an in-school football academy starting in 2027, and a game schedule that will allow SANFL clubs full access to Trinity players, the College expects to be challenging for Div 1 in the near future.
