Trinity Remain Intercol Champions

October 02, 2019

Trinity College has retained the Intercol trophy over St Michael’s after winning three of the five live open games. Anticipated as perhaps the closest Intercol matchup in the exchange’s six-year history, the main events did not disappoint.

In open boys soccer the Trinity First XI shocked the hosts with a half-way goal just seconds into the game and another not long after. St Michael’s clawed one back in the second half but Trinity held on.

In girls soccer St Michael’s were too strong everywhere for the young Trinity team, winning comfortably, but with most of the team back next year, our girls will be better for the experience.

The open netball match saw Trinity maintaining a narrow lead for the first half and gradually pulling away for a classy 10-goal victory.

The First XVIII football was a torrid affair, with not much separating the teams. Inaccurate kicking from St Michael’s kept the game alive, but Trinity was not able to create enough opportunities to pull ahead on the scoreboard.

The match of the 2019 Intercol was undoubtedly the basketball. Despite being crowned state champions for the third year in a row, Trinity knew St Michael’s had the talent to trouble them. Trinity pulled away to several double-figure leads throughout the game, but St Mick’s kept reeling them back and, with only seconds remaining, had a chance to tie with a three. The game-saving shot was short and the put-back on the buzzer made it a one-point game and the Intercol trophy returned to the north.

The final game of the open fixture was a girls football exhibition won by a talented St Michael’s team.
