2022 Trinity Vs St Michael’s Intercol Results

Trinity won four of the six open sports contested during this year’s Intercol, once again crowning Trinity College champions for 2022.

Open Boys Basketball, 1st VXII Football, Open Girls Netball and 1st XI soccer were all won by Trinity, while St Michael’s took out the Open Girls Football and Basketball. Thank you to all who came out and supported our teams. The Intercol is a special way to end the winter season and we are very lucky to have such a great Intercol partner in St Michael’s.

Boys First XI Soccer

Trinity were up for the game and started very strongly creating a number of chances that were not finished. Thoughts of the grand final lingered but Taj Claridge put the ball in the net from some great play by Vanderhout and White. Soon after White made it two with a rocket into the goals on the end of another Vanderhout ball. The score was 2-0 at the break. Again, not wanting a repeat of the previous week, Trinity came out firing in the second half and White added his second in the first minute. St Michael’s then managed a goal back after their CB headed home. Trinity continued to control the game as they played out from the back, dominated central areas and attacked both centrally and with width making the small pitch look huge. Braham finished bottom corner to make it four and seal the game. White got a third and confirmed his Intercol medal, before last year’s medalist Vanderhout, made it six. A dominant performance from start to finish from the First XI sealing five Intercol wins in a row and another Intercol win for Trinity. Well done to all involved in a near perfect season. We farewell six Year 12s and thank them for their contributions to College Soccer; Taj Claridge (C), Jacob Vanderhout, Evan Braham, Antonio Ielasi, Zac Halloran and Luke Manning. Trinity’s depth was on full display in the 2022 Intercol. Excellent perimeter shooting from our guards ensured that St Michael’s were always kept at arm’s length. Intercol medalist Makai Dornford was particularly potent from outside, as were Mitch Sayer and Noah Villanueva. Louis Schell continued his good run of form, but there were no Trinity passengers, with everyone contributing in the high-scoring affair. St Michael’s medalist Jamil Abu Hassan battled hard all day for the visitors, but Trinity were too big, too athletic and too disciplined for St Michael’s from the start. Special thank you to seniors Mani, Mitch, Louis, Eb and Jack for their stewardship of the TC Hoops culture throughout their tenure at the College. First VXII Football

Trinity 13.12 def St Michael’s 8.9

With most of the school surrounding the forward pocket on the Waldeck it was a great way to get the adrenalin pumping and that’s what happened for the Lions. A huge start with the first two goals. Captain Joseph Fenwick and midfielder Trent Tattoli set the tone early, smashing in at every contest. At the quarter time siren St Michael’s kicked a goal to make scores completely even. The second half is where Trinity broke away, kicking consecutive goals early and dominating general play. Isaac Downie, Beau Ryan and PJ Carlin set the tone in this quarter. Trinity took a three-goal lead into half-time. The third quarter was important Hudson Roberts, Lewis De Ruvo and Max Kershaw stood tall. Max was brutal in the air, Lewis clearance after clearance and Hudson Roberts was a tackling machine. At the final break Trinity lead by four goals. The last quarter started in St Michael’s favour, winning the first two clearances and had the ball locked in the forward 50 for the first five minutes. Fortunately for Trinity, Cameron Rogers and Hamish Mckiggin were huge lacking tackles, impacting aerial contests and using elite foot skills to stem the flow. Trinity wrestled momentum back and kicked some fantastic late goals to win the game by five goals. It was an intense start to the game for both teams with everyone having firm eyes for the ball, creating plenty of contest and making the umpires work to keep control of the game. It was a fairly even quarter, we let them stay in the game through some silly errors all and allowed their defensive pressure to hold us up and second guess ourselves when bringing the ball down the court. Ella Vardy applied some excellent pressure on their crafty GA and really slowed up their ability to get the ball to the post, allowing Krystal Collins to come out of the circle for some cracking intercepts. This, along with some strong rebounding from the girls, gave us plenty of ball to work with. We began to find our groove bringing the ball down court from defence and Bree Norton delivered some pin point feeds into our goalies who continued to build the scoreboard pressure. Gaz made some bold decisions at half time while the score was tight with just a three-goal lead at half time. Both teams made each other accountable for every ball, with some strong aerial takes and body work across the court. The depth of the Trinity team, paired with full court pressure that was applied all game was rewarded in the last quarter when we were able to really build score board pressure and finish victorious by six in a tightly contested game. St Michael’s 52 def Trinity 42

Congratulations to both teams for an excellent inaugural Intercol Open Girls Basketball game. The teams were tied at 14-14 at quarter time after both found their style of game early. Avenues to the basket were thwarted by Trinity’s zone defence but St Michael’s were equal to the task, knocking down three opening quarter triples. Trinity was able to establish a running game and were rewarded with some easy buckets of their own. Both teams slowed in the second quarter, as scoring options dried up. Trinity added just seven points and St Michael’s just five for a 21-19. Trinity lead at the long break. In the third, St Michael’s turned up the heat with a full court trap that rattled the young Trinity team and turned into the final quarter with a six-point lead over the hosts. A steady diet of deft perimeter shooting from St Michael’s spread out the Trinity defence in the last quarter, allowing Lily from St Michael’s the space she needed to dominate inside. Despite Trinity threatening to close the gap several times, timely steals and buckets from St Michael’s Intercol Medalist Coco Hodges proved the difference. St Michael’s 8.7 def Trinity 1.2

The senior girls played out a tough contest against St Michael’s in the annual Intercol. In wet and freezing conditions, the team made a terrific start with multiple forward entries. While we couldn’t convert, we went into half-time confident of pulling back the deficit. However, the opposition made the most of their opportunities and ran the game out with several late goals. The best on ground for Trinity was Tara Lord, who laid multiple tough tackles and controlled the midfield. Kelly Matiop dominated in the ruck and Charlotte Parks played her finest game for the season up front. The host of younger players in Years 8, 9 and 10 suggests there is a lot to look forward to in years to come. This team has been a delight to coach, inclusivity and positivity being their strengths.
