Nov 12:  The Trinity College Year 8/9 Knockout Basketball team has won the state championship after running away with the final today against St Francis de Sales of Mount Barker, 80-42.

The final was the fifth game of the day, and truly a war of attrition in the stifling heat.  The depth of the College basketball program was definitely evident as the team was able to rest many of its players during the minor rounds, courtesy of comfortable group-stage wins.

Biar Garang (SOU9) was the standout performer of the day, dazzling the crowd with some sensational dunks and aerial acrobatics, while Jackson Hately's (SOU8) performances were also exceptional.  Malachai Ah Matt Lovett (SOU9) created many opportunities for his teammates, and Bradley Skuce (NOR9) provided offensive punch at critical times.

Trinity had a size advantage in most of the games, with Campbell Watts (SOU9) and Ewan Scanlan (NOR9) providing Garang with excellent help on the boards, but it was the defensive end where Trinity separated itself from the other teams.  Constant defensive pressure from players like Henry Bennison (NOR9), Hudson Walsh (SOU8), Hannes Smit (NOR9) and Alex Winter (NOR8) made life miserable for opposition playmakers, and allowed the Trinity team to maintain fresh pressure long after other teams had wilted in the heat.

The title was just reward for months of hard work, with many members of the team practicing two hours each morning before school, five days a week, as well as regular club and school basketball commitments.  The team is very talented, no question, but they are talented for a reason - they have made it happen over countless hours of hard work.

The College congratulates these young men on their outstanding attitude, sportsmanship and comradery throughout their knockout campaign.
