James a Finalist in the 2018 Young Archies!

James Camilleri (Year 4) is one of the finalists of this year's Young Archie competition, the junior version of Australia's most famous portrait prize, the Archibald. Entrants are asked to draw or paint someone who's important to them.

"The person I decided to draw a portrait of is Norm, my art teacher. I chose Norm as he is very special to me and has taught me drawing, sketching, painting and much more. I wanted to draw him as his face has a lot of character. In art class we listen to Fleetwood Mac and talk about things that interest us, like superheroes and movies. I drew Norm in charcoal and it took me six hours." said James. View a Behind the News report about James' achievement here.

The sixth Young Archie competition attracted more than 1400 entries: 34% in the 5-8 year category, 38% in 9-12 year, 20% in 13-15 year and 8% in 16-18 year. Of the total, 72% were from girls.

The five finalists from each age category are displayed at the Art Gallery of NSW and the honourable mentions at the SH Ervin Gallery.

The competition was judged by the Gallery's community engagement manager and the guest judge – artist Abdul Abdullah, himself an Archibald Prize finalist in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2016 and a Sulman Prize finalist the last three years, including 2018.
