Team Oceania Wins Gold at FIRST Global Challenge

global 200717Oceanina 200717

On Wednesday 19 July, Year 11 students Michael Brady, Bowen Hawkey, Samuel Moloney, Luke Voigt and Nathan Axford, who formed Team Oceania, were declared overall winners of the FIRST Global Challenge winning the Gold Einstein Award in recognition of the team whose robots performed the best during the challenge and who exemplified all of the tenets of the FIRST Global community. This is an outstanding achievement for these students who we rightly congratulate for their dedication, commitment and innovation.

Team Oceania represented the entire continent of Oceania (not just Australia) at the FIRST Global Challenge and was made up members of the Trinity BaCoNeers. Team Oceania also included two mentors, current Trinity teacher Sue O'Malley and Trinity Director of ICT Andrew Larner. See live action of the event and medal presentation here.

The FIRST Global Challenge is an annual robotics event that aims to address one of the 14 Grand Challenges identified by the national engineering academies of the United States, United Kingdom, and China. Each year, a different issue of global importance takes centre stage as the theme of that year's FIRST Global Challenge. The 2017 Grand Challenge Theme was providing access to clean water.

The FIRST Global Challenge is a truly international robotics event where students from 160 nations across the world participate. Teams are composed of high school students with the goal of increasing their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) so they can become the next generation of scientific leaders who will work together to solve some of the world's most pressing problems.
