2011 Year 10 Graduation

From the Principal

The Year to Challenge Yourself
On behalf of the staff of Trinity College South I would like to thank you as parents for your support and understanding throughout this year. Ours is a three way partnership between students, teachers and parents. Together we aim to build a School community that is caring, supportive and challenging so as to create a positive pathway for our students for the future. We know that this journey can present some challenges but that these are opportunities to build character.

We look forward to working together with you next year as we take the next step in the journey together.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank the students and especially the Student Leaders and School Captains, Lachlan Arthur and Rachel Dempster for their enthusiasm and support this year. I am proud to be the Principal of Trinity College South students.

Farewell to Staff
Thank you an farewell to Mr John Palmer, Miss Melissa Apa, Mrs Sharyn Williams and Mrs Michelle Brammy who have completed their teaching contracts. Mrs Jessica Stace (who is currently on maternity leave) will move to Trinity Blakeview School in Term 2 next year. I am grateful to these staff for their contribution to South this year.

Welcome to New Staff
I am delighted to welcome Mrs Kathy Hatzimanolis to the position of Head of Teaching and Learning R-6, Mr George Gregory PE teacher and Head of Chisholm House and Mr Gavin Pearce Year 6 Class Teacher who will join the South team in 2012.

Year 10 Graduation
This week we recognised the completion of Middle School for our Year 10 students and acknowledged their progression to Senior.  We were joined by Mr Robert Smedley Deputy Head Trinity College , Mr Kym Reynolds Principal of Trinity College Senior and aptly a number of parents and friends whose support has been vital to the success of these students.

I wish to thank Head of Middle School, Miss Audrey Somerville and Heads of Pastoral Care, Mrs Sue Norris and Mr Damon Wilson for their organisation of this memorable event. Thank you to those who spoke so well; Mrs Nicolle Dempster who spoke so well on behalf of the parents, Chaplain Craig and School Captains, Lachlan Arthur and Rachel Dempster. We were entertained by many of our talented musicians and vocalists Ellen Broughton, Jade Koek, Jade McLean and Courtney Broughton.

Best wishes to all students for a restful holiday.

Speech Day and Awards Ceremony 2011
Our Speech Day and Award Ceremony will be held on Wednesday 14 December commencing at 1.30pm in the Hewitson Theatre at STARplex. All students are to bring their jumper and/or blazer with all boys required to wear a tie.

Our guest of honour this year is Mr Mark Le Messurier, teacher, author and conference presenter. Mark’s background spans twenty years in schools and includes special education, adult education, child-centred education and community education projects.

Parking will be available in the area off Greening Drive to the North of STARplex. We ask parents not to park in the streets surrounding STARplex. Signs indicating designated parking areas will be on display.

Creche facilities will be available, however bookings are essential. Please contact STARplex Reception on 8522 0622 or STARplex Creche on 8523 8784.

Student attendance to Speech Day is compulsory. In the event a student is unable to attend, a formal indication of this inability is to be forwarded to myself via the relevant class teacher or Head of House.

South School Parents and Friends
Staff and students are indebted to the support of a number of parents over this year. Our partnership has enabled us to make South a better place that offers more to our students and their parents.

I would like to thank the generous support of the Parents & Friends Committee this year including Annette Gilbert, Ann-Maree Roche, Cate Hammond, Ian Sutherland, Jo Cammans, Lisa Juhas, Margaret Gordon, Phyllis Little, Sam Thomas, Steve Crouch, Wendy Stimson, David Russell and especially our passionate and dedicated president, Bruce Hobby. There are a number of great South events that simply would not run were it not for the efforts of these parents and their helpers.

In 2012 we would like to continue to seek support from parents for individual events rather than for all P & F events so that a greater number of parents can be involved. One member of P & F would have primary responsibility for one event and that way a number of parents have the opportunity to assist. If you are interested in supporting in any way next year please let our President, Bruce Hobby know by email.

New parents are most welcome and this is a very rewarding way of involving yourself in the school community.

Best wishes for a happy Christmas and safe holidays.

MARK SIMPSON
Principal

Nick Hately at the 2011 Valedictory Service

From the Head of the College

Dear parents

As the year closes it is great to have an opportunity to reflect on the celebrations that have occurred and that are still to come at this extraordinarily busy time.

I have had the pleasure of being involved in Year 10 graduation ceremonies at North, South, Blakeview and Gawler River schools and the Trinity College Senior (TCS) Valedictory Service.  It is always astonishing to hear of the great feats that our students achieve and the manner in which they go about their study at Trinity.

Year 12 students have finished their time at Trinity College and I wish them all the very best of luck as they await their SACE results.

There is an enormous amount of work undertaken in the last weeks of school to ensure that the end of the year is well managed and memorable for students, including “O” week for Year 11 students; Year 10 orientation to TCS, House dinners, final assessments and preparations for school speech days.

I would like to thank all students for their contribution to the life of their school and to thank, on behalf of all parents and students, the teachers for their tireless efforts throughout 2011.

I would also like to thank parents for your commitment to your children’s education over the course of the year.  I would encourage all parents to continue to be involved in College life as far as they are able; it certainly makes a difference to the lives of our students.

Have a blessed and safe Christmas and New Year.  I look forward to meeting with you all again in 2012.

NICK HATELY
Head of Trinity College

Parents and Friends

I am having trouble coming to grips with the fact that 2011 is nearly over. The year has passed by so quickly and I am sure a lot of us don’t want to be another year older quite so quickly.

This Year’s Events
It’s been another great year for the P&F. We had a number of successful fund raising events such as the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Stalls, the Junior School Sports Day and the Trinity College Open Day where we had great support from the families at South who donated freshly baked cakes and biscuits for us to sell. A sincere thank you to all.

As well as these events we  had the Astronomy Night and the Billy Cart Race Day which are great family events.

With the money we raised during the year we were able to purchase aluminium benches for around the school, numerous mature trees that were planted around the school to provide shade, video cameras for the successful South Tube (which all the students love to watch) and a number of smaller contributions to various school activities throughout the year.

Photographic Competition
We had a fantastic response to our Photographic Competition again this year with the winners announced this week. The standard of entries was quiet amazing. There is no doubt there is some real photographic talent at this school. Keep up the good work; photography is a hobby and maybe even a profession that can give a lot of pleasure over a lifetime.

The winners of the Photographic Competition are Sophie Collings, Callum Borchard and Jade Koek for each age category with the overall winner being Jade Koek for her stunning photo of two autumn leaves on a rock. Thank you to Dymocks at Glenelg and Photographic Wholesalers in Adelaide who donated some of the prizes that were awarded to the winners.

Thank You
I’d like to thank all the office staff, grounds staff and teachers at Trinity South for making our school the great place that it is. Without the commitment to your job, our children would not have the facilities they have or the opportunity to be as successful as they can be. Thank you and enjoy your holidays, you deserve them.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has supported our events this year and a special thank you to everyone on the P & F Committee for their hard work during the year.

Have a happy, healthy and safe 2012. Keep smiling and don’t forget to have fun with your children.

School Captains' Report

Year 10 Graduation
Once again we have come to the end of another year at South School.  Sadly for the Year 10 group it will be their last.  The Year 10 Graduation Ceremony was held on Wednesday 7 December. A big thank you needs to go to all the parents, teachers, staff members and the students themselves for making their time at South School so successful.  Some of the graduating students have been at South for a full 11 years or more and all of the students have completed a great commitment in graduating as great people who have left the school a better place than it was when they arrived. Congratulations to all the Year 10s.

Thank You
We would like to thank everybody who has supported us in our roles as School Captains this year.  The support of the teachers and our parents along with the involvement of the students has made our year really enjoyable and highly successful.  Thanks to Mrs Norris who has been a pivotal supporter and mentor to us.  She has helped us make sure all our events have been successful and helped us to become better leaders.  The Student Leadership Team also needs to be recognised for their hard work throughout the year and we hope they have come out the other side as great leaders and go forward with the passion to be leaders again in the future.

Sporting Events
The year is just about over but there are many more events and celebrations happening before the end of the year.  After our graduation we will be holding a Teachers versus Students Twenty20 Cricket Match.  The game will start at 12 o’clock on the Main Oval.  There is also a Teachers versus Students Netball Game to be held during Monday lunchtime.  Both these events will be highly entertaining so we hope you can get along to watch.

Speech Day
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of South School over the past 11 years.  We hope South can continue to improve and be the great place it has been to us during our time there. Please don’t forget the Speech Day Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 14 December.  It would be great to see as many parents as possible there to celebrate the year.

Cybersmart Networking

Private Lives in Public Spaces
The Australian Communications and Media Authority formally launched Cybersmart Networking a new online safety resource for students in Hobart this week.

Cybersmart Networking
allows students to explore potential issues they may face on social networking sites, all in a safe school environment. The activity introduces a number of real-life situations that can have serious repercussions now and in the future.

Research by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) into young people’s use of the internet found that 16 to 17 year olds are online at least six days per week for about three-and-a-half hours per day. It also showed that many young people don’t always think about the way their use of social networking sites could impact on them in the future.

Cybersmart Networking uses a realistic online environment to teach young people how to stay safe on social networking sites, without exposing them to real risks.

The activity is part of the ACMA’s suite of Cybersmart Interactive Shared Learning activities to educate and empower students so that they can manage cybersafety issues, discover what information is safe for them to post online, and negotiate the balance between their private and public online lives.

To register for and play Cybersmart Networking, send an email and for more information about the Cybersmart program visit the website.

Sports News

Thanks to everyone involved in Trinity Sport for 2011.  We once again had excellent participation across numerous sports, with around 1200 students representing the College in over 200 teams from reception right through to Year 12.

We also had some outstanding individual and team achievements including state finals for soccer, netball and basketball, which included an open soccer state title.  Other excellent team results included our open boys athletics team and our College cross country squad.  Individually, students from across the College were chosen in numerous state teams and elite squads while swimmer James McKechnie became a national champion swimmer and 2011 Sportsperson of the Year Travis Head toured India with the Australian U/19 World Cup Cricket squad and played in the SA Futures Team.

Elsewhere, Trinity College has created a Sporting Hall of Fame, elite performance academies have been initiated and have forged a greater commitment to developing the whole athlete through focused strength and conditioning programs.  Netball continues its exceptional popularity and has now moved the majority of it teams to a STARplex based competition, while swimming and cricket have confirmed high-level coaching appointments for 2012.

A big thank you to all the coordinators, coaches, grounds staff, volunteers and parents for making 2011 another outstanding year in sport.

Check out a video montage of our successful sporting moments here.
