From the Principal

Dear students and parents

This is our last newsletter for the year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all in our community, staff, students and parents, for their support in 2011.

The opportunities for our students at TCS are enormous and the class of 2011 should be congratulated for embracing their education.  Our Year 12 students are to be praised for their friendliness, endeavour and maturity.  I look forward to the class of 2012 stepping up to the same challenges next year.

Valedictory Speech Day and Dinner
Members of our College community, Mr Ray Oermann (College Council Chair), Dr Rupert Thorne (Trinity College Foundation Chair), Mr Nick Hately (Head of Trinity College) and Mr Robert Smedley (Deputy Head) presented academic and service awards to TCS students at our formal Valedictory Awards Ceremony in the Hewitson Theatre. They were joined by distinguished guests Archbishop Jeffrey Driver (Archbishop of Adelaide), Mr Gary Le Duff (CEO AISSA), Mr Raffaele Piccolo (President Adelaide University Student Union) and Dr Bruce Eastick (OAM) who also presented awards and spoke to the audience.

Students arrive at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for the Valedictory Dinner

During the ceremony Dux and Effort Awards were presented in all subject areas and Year 12 students were presented with a bible and folio. In addition Mr Hately announced Hannah Donhardt as College Captain for 2012 and the Senior Choir, Senior Band, Year 11 singers and guitarist Tim Atkinson provided music during the service. To see a complete list of award recipients click here.

The Valedictory address was delivered by School Captain Gavin Matthews who spoke about the inspiration he gained from studying Teddy Roosevelt this year.  He thanked his fellow students and the Prefect groups for their support and encouragement during the year.

In the evening over 600 parents and students attended the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for the Valedictory Dinner to celebrate with the class of 2011.

The event, organised by Prefects and Mr Philp, gave students a chance to thank their parents and teachers, have more photos taken and socialise in an adult environment.

Year 12 Art Show and Design Technology Exhibition

Year 12 Art students presented their moderated work in The Space gallery and Design Technology students exhibited in the Common. Mrs Russell welcomed parents, friends and students along with former Head or Trinity College Mr Luke Thomson and his family.

House Dinners
I was fortunate enough to attend several House Dinners in the past few weeks. These occasions are a wonderful opportunity for members of a House to develop social skills, recognise achievements and celebrate group successes. I would like to thank the organisers of Warren, Florey, Whittington, Tebbutt and Tregenza for the invitations to their excellent House dinners.

Metal Engineering Information Session
An information session was held in the Trinity Trade Centre on Wednesday 7 December at 7.15pm. Information was provided to parents and VET students on the course format, support structures and work placement.

Year 11 in 2012 Orientation Program
This two day program for Year 10 students is held today at TCS and involves OH&S training, student driver education organised by Rotary (RYDA program), an introduction to SACE, Student Leadership, at TCS culture and a question and answer panel of current student leaders. The program concluded with our second hand book sales in the Hall (3.30pm – 4.30pm).

Ordination of Rev David MacGillivray

Rev David MacGillivray was ordained as a priest in the Anglican Church at St Peter’s Cathedral on Sunday 26 November. This was a special occasion for our community as David is an old scholar and has been a chaplain at TCS for several years. He went on to celebrate his first communion service at the Church of the Transfiguration at Gawler the following day.

St Francis Congregation
Thank you to Rev Tony Nicholls and members of the St Francis congregation for providing morning tea to TCS staff recently. The event was a thank you to our staff for their efforts with students this year.

Best wishes and merry Christmas.

Nick Hately at the 2011 Valedictory Service

From the Head of the College

Dear parents

As the year closes it is great to have an opportunity to reflect on the celebrations that have occurred and that are still to come at this extraordinarily busy time.

I have had the pleasure of being involved in Year 10 graduation ceremonies at North, South, Blakeview and Gawler River schools and the Trinity College Senior (TCS) Valedictory Service.  It is always astonishing to hear of the great feats that our students achieve and the manner in which they go about their study at Trinity.

Year 12 students have finished their time at Trinity College and I wish them all the very best of luck as they await their SACE results.

There is an enormous amount of work undertaken in the last weeks of school to ensure that the end of the year is well managed and memorable for students, including “O” week for Year 11 students; Year 10 orientation to TCS, House dinners, final assessments and preparations for school speech days.

I would like to thank all students for their contribution to the life of their school and to thank, on behalf of all parents and students, the teachers for their tireless efforts throughout 2011.

I would also like to thank parents for your commitment to your children’s education over the course of the year.  I would encourage all parents to continue to be involved in College life as far as they are able; it certainly makes a difference to the lives of our students.

Have a blessed and safe Christmas and New Year.  I look forward to meeting with you all again in 2012.

NICK HATELY
Head of Trinity College

Student Retreat

Students studying Year 12 in 2012 attended our annual Retreat last week at the Mylor Baptist Camp.

A full range of challenging activities over three days exhausted both staff and students. Teachers shared personal stories, most students took the ‘leap of faith’ and all were well fed and well looked after by camp staff. Rev David MacGillivray ran the camp with sessions based around the Star Wars catch phrase‘may the force be with you.’ Another highlight was the Positive Pockets, a collection of personal notes to students from each other, read quietly at the end of the Retreat. Thank you to parents for supporting the Retreat and writing letters to your children.

Sports News

Thanks to everyone involved in Trinity Sport for 2011.  We once again had excellent participation across numerous sports, with around 1200 students representing the College in over 200 teams from reception right through to Year 12.

We also had some outstanding individual and team achievements including state finals for soccer, netball and basketball, which included an open soccer state title.  Other excellent team results included our open boys athletics team and our College cross country squad.  Individually, students from across the College were chosen in numerous state teams and elite squads while swimmer James McKechnie became a national champion swimmer and 2011 Sportsperson of the Year Travis Head toured India with the Australian U/19 World Cup Cricket squad and played in the SA Futures Team.

Elsewhere, Trinity College has created a Sporting Hall of Fame, elite performance academies have been initiated and have forged a greater commitment to developing the whole athlete through focused strength and conditioning programs.  Netball continues its exceptional popularity and has now moved the majority of it teams to a STARplex based competition, while swimming and cricket have confirmed high-level coaching appointments for 2012.

A big thank you to all the coordinators, coaches, grounds staff, volunteers and parents for making 2011 another outstanding year in sport.

Check out a video montage of our successful sporting moments here.
