From the Principal Dear Parents As we rapidly approach the end of another academic year there are a few items that I would like to bring to your attention. Speech Day We are delighted that Mr Matthew Cowdrey, Australia's 2008 Paralympian of the Year, will be our guest speaker on Speech Day which will take place on Thursday December 11 at 1.30pm in the STARplex Theatre. Matthew became the 2008 Paralympic Games highest winning medallist when he won eight medals, five gold and three silver, at the iconic Water Cube in Beijing. Incredibly, each of his gold medals were won in world record time. After winning seven medals in Athens four years ago, Cowdrey is now third on the all-time list of Australian Paralympic medallists. I am sure you will all want to hear this inspiring speaker and outstanding sportsman. Grandparents' Day Grandparents' Day is a timely reminder of the important role these people play in the lives of our students, in many cases on a very regular basis. It was delightful to have them at school for the morning and I hope they enjoyed the experience and association as much as we value their support. The various activities involved visiting classes, assisting teachers and student learning, sharing morning tea and attending a fabulous music concert. It is appropriate to thank all the Staff and Student Leaders who made Grandparents'’ Day a tremendous success. Remembrance Day Remembrance Day is the day Australians remember those who have died in war. At 11.00am on November 11 we will pause as a school to remember the sacrifice of those men and women who have died or suffered in wars and conflicts and for all those who have served during the past 100 years. Our ceremony will take place on the lawn area at the rear of the old South Office and parents are welcome to attend this special service. As a mark of respect we are asking all our students to wear their blazer or jumper and to display a red poppy. The red poppies will be available to students each morning, for 50c, and can be worn each day until Wednesday November 12. Canteen We have found it necessary to change the management structure of the South School Canteen and therefore students and parents may find that our service will be somewhat different from the beginning of Week 6. It is our intention to have a healthy and flourishing Canteen in operation from the beginning of the 2009 school year. Applications are now being sought for people who may be interested in this management position. Please see separate notice late in the eNews. page break Canberra Trip Many of you would be aware of the unfortunate events that took place on the recent Year 7 trip to Canberra. Our students had a wonderful week away and despite the problems with the buses, they were the recipients of wonderful community generosity from the people of Canberra. We are currently in the process of thanking the Canberra community and specific individuals for this outpouring of human kindness. I would like to draw your attention, and pay tribute to Mr Colin Doherty, the owner operator of Kanga Coachlines, the company we used to transport our students to and from Canberra. Despite suffering considerable personal loss, Colin was outstanding in ensuring that our students were safe and that their excursion continued without interruption, and within a couple of hours had secured replacement coaches to ensure their travel home was safe, comfortable and on schedule. In conjunction with the Year 7 students and teachers we are launching a 'Kanga Coachline' appeal for the remainder of this term in an attempt to support Colin and his company through this difficult time. A number of fundraising activities are currently in the planning stage and we hope to present Colin with our thanks and appreciation as part of our Speech Day Ceremony this year. Dads and Lads I would like to invite fathers with their sons to our inaugural 'Dads and Lads' event which will be held at the South School on Thursday November 20, 2008 from 5.30pm. More detailed information will be sent home with the students in the near future. Please keep this date free. Year 10 Students The 2008 School Year is nearing an end and our Year 10 students are preparing to enter the Senior School. I wish to inform you of the arrangements regarding the Year 10 students during their final two weeks at South School. The Year 10 students will have their last formal lessons on Thursday December 4 and will not be required to attend school on Friday December 5. The transition programme into the Senior School for all continuing Year 10’s commences on Monday December 8 and runs until Wednesday December 10. Full details have been sent to all families by mail. P & F The P & F are instrumental in organising and running many events within the school year and the last meeting for 2008 is next Wednesday November 12 at 7.00pm. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of parents who work tirelessly to support the school by providing funds for us to acquire valuable resources and equipment. 2009 Subjects During Week 7 all students will be informed of their subjects for 2009 so they can complete their preparations for the purchasing of the relevant text books. Information regarding specific class teachers will be sent to parents at the beginning of Week 9. Best Wishes Stuart Johnston |

page break From the Head of Trinity College Dear Parents College Operational Plan Thank you for your feedback on the plan. Some comments I have received on the plan wondered why it was a general set of directions rather than specific actions. The plan has a comprehensive and detailed action plan associated with it that is considered by College Council and managed by the staff at the College. Copies of appropriate sections of the detailed plan will be accessible from each school office from the beginning of 2009. All parents will become familiar with the actions as each year progresses and schools focus on the challenges set by the plan. The important message for all parents at this point is the thrust of the operational plan, to improve student performance and that harnessing parental support to achieve this is an important feature of the plan. Media interest in Canberra Many of you would have noticed media interest in South's Year 7 trip to Canberra. Unfortunately, the buses that took our students were vandalised and severely damaged. This led to considerable media interest. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Johnston and staff, students and parents at South for their wonderful approach to the situation. The students, staff and parents on the trip were outstanding under trying circumstances and I would like to thank them for their efforts. The thoughts of the College go to the bus company owner, Mr Colin Doherty for his ability to find replacement buses at short notice. Mr Doherty was exceptional and our students and staff on the trip have the highest regard for his kindness and thoughtfulness at a moment when he sustained considerable losses. Grandparents’ Day It was a thrill to attend Grandparents' Day at all schools. It is a fabulous day and one that has entrenched itself as a significant calendar event for each school. Our grandparents offer a great deal to students at the College and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for it. Thank you must also go to those who organised the event, particularly the P&F teams. Frocks and Fillies I spent some time at the combined Blakeview and North, Melbourne Cup event which included a focus on raising awareness about breast cancer. It was an excellent event and one that I am sure will grow into quite a tradition. Thanks to the organisers for their efforts and I am looking forward to next year's event. All the best Luke Thomson |

P & F News Greeting Friends The end of another year is closing in on us as reports and exams begin. House Dinners Another more enjoyable sign that the end-of-year is upon us are the House Dinners. I had the opportunity to attend my first House Dinner on Tuesday November 4and it was very enjoyable. It was great to see members of Mawson House stand up and speak in front of everyone. For some, it would be their first time doing so, but it is a great confidence booster. Thanks to all Heads of House for their dedication and the guidance they provide our children. Primary Interschool Swimming Competition Last weekend was the final in the 3-meet series to find the champion school. It was a well attended meet with almost a dozen schools represented. There were many outstanding performances, both individual and relay, and the cheering by the many observers was both vigorous and loud. The great outcome was that Trinity were awarded 1st place for the meet, but gained 2nd position overall based on aggregate points over the entire series. Congratulations to the South School Swim Team. Please keep safe on the roads and please, give your kids a hug each day. Next Meeting Wednesday November 12, 7.00pm. Please advise if you are planning to attend this meeting as it will be held in a different location. Andre Ghouse South.PandF@trinity.sa.edu.au page break

Red Poppies for Remembrance Day Tuesday November 11 is Remembrance Day. At Trinity College, red poppies will be available for 50 cents each. Heads of Schools have given permission for students to wear a red poppy with their school uniform on Remembrance Day. Over the years this important national day has taken on greater significance at each of our schools. Therefore, it is hoped that as many students and staff as possible will avail themselves of a red poppy (a "Flanders Poppy") and wear it with thankfulness and humility on Remembrance Day. Year 7 Canberra Trip Australian Government Assistance for a National Capital Excursion Students from Trinity College South have recently undertaken an educational tour of the National Capital. While on this tour they participated in a variety of educational programmes focussed on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government will contribute funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution will be paid directly to the school. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this programme. Activities undertaken as part of the educational tour included visiting Parliament House, Old Parliament House, National War Memorial, Australian Institute of Sport, National Museum and National Zoo. We are sure the excursion was a rewarding experience for all students. Stuart Johnston |

Paterson House Dinner The students of Paterson House, along with their family and friends enjoyed the recent House Dinner. The dinner provided the opportunity to reflect on 2008 and farewell the Year 10's from South and the Year 12's from Trinity College. Adele Tassone, accompanied by Mr Roy Malone, sang "I am Australian", Jessica Tassone played a saxophone solo, and reports were presented by Katey Snaith and Troy Algar, Adele Tassone and Molly Snaith. Photos from the year’s House events were presented in a PowerPoint. page break In her reflections, the Head of House, Mrs Jan Kelly, spoke about making the most of opportunities that are presented and being flexible and prepared to change course, if necessary. The company was great, the food was delicious, and apart from a slight wardrobe malfunction, the evening went very smoothly. |
